The district office of a Turkish opposition party was subjected to an armed attack in Istanbul's Arnavutköy district early on Sept. 21.

The office of the Democracy and Progress Party (DEVA), which is led by former deputy prime minister Ali Babacan, was targeted by unknown assailants.

Seven bullets hit the office, police said, while a single shooter was seen getting out of a car to carry out the attack around 3.30 a.m.

Windows and desks in the office were hit by the bullets and an investigation was launched into the shooting.

DEVA Arnavutköy chair Fatih Karabalık said that the party wasn't expecting such an attack, adding that individual armament has been on the rise in Turkey.

"Video footage shows a car being parked, the person in question getting out and shooting while targeting our offices," Karabalık said.

The chairman said that they were waiting for orders from the party administration before saying more about the attack.
