Turkish people tipped off prosecutors once in every three minutes last year, according to a report prepared by CHP deputy Gamze Akkuş İlgezdi, showing the extent that tipping off people have become in the country. According to the report, the increase in the numbers began when the country switched to an executive presidential system on July 9, 2018, replacing a 95-year-old parliamentary system.

Turkish people tipped off prosecutors once in every three minutes last year, according to a report prepared by a main opposition deputy, showing the extent that tipping off people have become in the country.

In her report, Republican People's Party (CHP) deputy Gamze Akkuş İlgezdi said that prosecutors received 176,380 tip offs, which is a result of the authorities' encouragement of the move.

According to the report, the increase in the numbers began when the country switched to an executive presidential system on July 9, 2018, replacing a 95-year-old parliamentary system.

The number of tip offs in 2018 was 80,866, while the number increased by 118 percent in 2019 and reached 176,380, the report based on data from the Justice Ministry said.

Official data showed the highest number of tip offs was received from Istanbul with 17,413, which corresponds to some 48 tip offs daily on average. Ten percent of the overall tip offs in 2019 were also received from the city.

Out of the 176,380 tip offs, some 167,293 were put into process and probes were launched into 14 percent of those.

Commenting on the statistics, İlgezdi said that the increase is in parallel with authoritarianism and discriminating policies.
