Turkish police detain TİP’s Ankara candidate Elif Çongur on allegations of 'insulting' AKP deputy
Turkish police on April 28 detained Workers' Party of Turkey (TİP) Ankara MP candidate Elif Çongur on a flight from Ankara to Istanbul on the grounds of "insulting" ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) MP Bülent Turan.

Police on April 28 detained Elif Çongur, a candidate for the Workers' Party of Turkey (TİP) in Ankara, while she was aboard a plane traveling from Ankara to Istanbul.
The reason for her detention was based on allegations of "insulting" ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) Parliamentary Group Deputy Chair Bülent Turan.
TİP released a statement with regards to the detention on its Twitter account. "Our Ankara 3rd district MP candidate Elif Çongur was taken into custody with a warrant for her arrest for allegedly insulting AKP Group Deputy Chair Bülent Turan. Those who spend the last days of their rule intimidating the opposition on fabricated reasons should know well that on May 14, this system will come to an end, and the real criminals will be held accountable," the party said.
Çongur was dismissed from the Theater Department of Ankara University's Faculty of Language, History, and Geography with a decree law in 2017 for signing the Academics for Peace Declaration.
