Turkish unemployment dips to 11.2 percent, according to official data

The government-run Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has reported an unemployment rate of 11.2 percent in December as the country struggles with a deepening economic crisis.

Turkey's unemployment rate fell 0.1 percentage point to 11.2% in December, while a seasonally adjusted measure of labour underutilisation rose 0.5 percentage points to 22.6%, according to data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) on Feb. 10. 

The number of unemployed persons aged 15 years old and over increased by 2,000 to 3.7 million people in December 2021 in Turkey compared to the previous month, TÜİK said.  

The number of employed persons increased by 236,000 to 30.1 million people in December 2021 compared to the previous month. The employment rate occurred as 47.0% with 0.3 percentage point increase.

The labour underutilisation measure was on a falling trend for much of last year after peaking at 29.5% in January 2021 under the impact of measures to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

The labour force participation rate rose 0.3 percentage points from a month earlier to 52.9% in December, TÜİK data also showed.
