Popular social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, went offline on Oct. 4 during what appeared to be a widespread outage affecting users across the world, including in Turkey.

All three apps are owned by Facebook, and share the same infrastructure. Users began reporting that the apps had failed around evening hours.

App users could open WhatsApp and Instagram, but the platforms failed to send or receive messages.

It is unclear what has caused the issue although the company has suffered outages before.

Facebook Communications spokesperson, Andy Stone, took to Twitter to announce that the company is aware that “people are having trouble accessing our apps and products” and that they are “working to get things back to normal as soon as possible.”

Turkish Deputy Transport and Infrastructure Minister Ömer Fatih Sayan released a statement on Twitter with regards to the outage, saying that the problem was global and "users in our country are also partially affected" by it.

He said that such problems "once again reveal the importance of domestic and national message apps." "Outages that are occurring in these platforms frequently show the necessity of a new regulation with regards to consumer rights," he further tweeted.
