A Turkish youth has been briefly detained for going on the stage during a concert and urging the audience “not to vote for” the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

The incident occurred on Aug. 17 evening in the Central Anatolian province of Konya during a concert organized as part of the 5th Islamic Solidarity Games.

As the vocal artist Taner Yüncüoğlu was singing a song, the youth known by initials only M.O. took the microphone from the hands of Yüncüoğlu and shouted “Konya, wake up now, don't vote for the AKP” to the audience and then ran away from the stage. The youth was detained by the police but later released after his testimony.

Among the audience was also Youth and Sports Minister Muharrem Kasapoğlu.

Several people on social media shared the video showing the youth's action and singer Yüncüoğlu's shock afterwards.

“The youth are raising their voice for an independent future! 'Konya wake up now, don't vote for the AKP,'” wrote main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) MP Ali Mahir Başarır.
