TikTok users in Turkey have started a new trend on the social media platform featuring the image and voice of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Citizens have posted videos of themselves counting money but then hiding it when an image of Erdoğan appears behind them.

The video is accompanied by the voice of Erdoğan who says "Take out the foreign exchange and gold from under your pillows."

The “gold” under the pillow is one of the traditional saving methods of the Turkish people. With depleted Central Bank reserves and upcoming foreign debt payments, government officials have been trying to convince people to put their money into the banks.

Meanwhile, at midnight on Sept. 14, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation into the relevant videos over charges of "insulting the President." The prosecutors instructed the police to determine the people who created and shared the videos.
