Two CHP executives beaten in polling station

The CHP’s former MP Ali Şeker on May 28 was beaten in the Eyyübiye district of Southeastern Şanlıurfa province where he went to monitor the elections because he objected to men who tried to vote instead of women. CHP MP Mahmut Tanal, who later went to the district, said he was also attacked.

The main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) former Istanbul MP Ali Şeker on May 28 was attacked by a group of 40 people in a remote village of the Eyyübiye district of Southeastern Şanlıurfa province.

Şeker said, "This is a village where men cast votes in place of women. There are 1093 voters here. Imagine that 1074 people are supposedly voting for Erdoğan. We reported it to the governorship and the police to take precautions. The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) members were threatening the ballot box officials.”

He stated that they were accused of being affiliated with terrorist organizations and added, “There were only four gendarmerie officers here. Some 30-40 people tried to attack us. Thanks to those who intervened, a big lynching was prevented.”

The CHP’s Şanlıurfa MP Mahmut Tanal, who went to the polling station where Şeker was beaten, was also subjected to attack. Tanal made the following statements on his Twitter account, “There is a state weakness here! We will not give in to threats and attacks, we will protect the ballot boxes! We are right, we will win!”

Tanal had called on the governorship, police directorate, and gendarmerie to ensure the security of the ballot box in the early morning hours in a post on his social media account.
