Two workers killed in soil collapse in Turkish capital Ankara

Two workers have died in a collapse during a sewer project in Polatlı, Ankara. Police detained a construction supervisor, and Ankara officials stated judicial and administrative investigations were ongoing.

Two workers died in a Jan. 9 collapse during a sewer connection project in Turkey's capital Ankara.

The collapse occurred in the Polatlı district during work on a sewer connection for a completed apartment building. 

Rescue efforts began to retrieve workers Sinan Yaman and İzzet Keskin buried under the soil. Crews first recovered one worker's body. The second worker’s body was retrieved about two hours later.

The Ankara Governor’s Office announced that one construction supervisor was taken into custody and that judicial and administrative investigations were ongoing.

Turkey’s Assembly for Worker Health and Safety (İSİG) announced that at least 1708 workers were killed in workplace accidents from January to November of 2024.
