Boğaziçi University's resistance to Erdoğan's rector enters fourth week
The resistance of Boğaziçi University's community against President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's appointment of a politician as rector to their school entered its fourth week. A member of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), Melih Bulu's appointment has been widely protested with humor by students, who made artwork alluding to his love of the band Metallica.
Boğaziçi University students set up a small exhibition on campus to protest the newly appointed Bulu, where they wrote his name and the word "appointed" on famous brand logos.
One of the works hung on the rectorial building depicted Bulu's shadow as a clown, as the official is seen mostly as a mouthpiece for the government.
Meanwhile, academics have been continuing their peaceful protest in front of the rectorial building despite bad weather conditions, standing with their backs to Bulu's office with umbrellas in the rain.
Boğaziçi members are calling for democratic elections to be held to elect a rector, as the appointment of Bulu via presidential decree is considered a massive blow to academic freedom.
