Erdoğan, wife catch 'mild' cases of Omicron, resting in Istanbul home

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Feb. 5 that he and his wife, Emine, have tested positive for the Omicron variant of the COVID-19, but they are doing well at home.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Feb. 5 that he and his wife, Emine, had tested positive for the Omicron variant of COVID-19.

"The result of our COVID-19 tests done after showing mild symptoms with my wife came back positive. Thank god we are going through Omicron variant of the disease mildly," Erdoğan said in a tweet.

Bugün hafif belirtiler üzerine eşimle birlikte yaptırdığımız COVID-19 testimizin sonucu pozitif çıktı. Omicron varyantı olduğunu öğrendiğimiz hastalığı hamdolsun hafif geçiriyoruz.

Erdoğan also said he will continue his work from home during their recovery.

The president sent the message after appearing via videolink at a tunnel-opening ceremony from Istanbul, having canceled his appearance in person.

Party officials, ministers and opposition leaders have sent wishes of fast recovery following the announcement.

Earlier this week, in a trip to Kyiv, Erdoğan held talks with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskiy, and offered to host a meeting between Putin and Zelenskiy.

Meanwhile, Turkey on Feb. 5 reported 98,715 new coronavirus cases and 221 related deaths.
