Erdoğan alleged that the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) was the ruling party at the time when the 1999 Marmara Earthquake happened. However, this was not the case.
The coalition consisting of the Democratic Left Party (DSP), the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and the Motherland Party (ANAP) were running the government. Current MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli was the deputy prime minister at the time.
Another lie that Erdoğan uttered during the election campaign was that the opposition’s presidential candidate Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu “would close down” the Housing Development of Turkey (TOKİ). However, Kılıçdaroğlu never made such a statement. The CHP leader only said that he was planning to change TOKİ’s head if he assumes power.
The opposition Nation Alliance’s election manifesto only said that the state-run TOKİ would be turned into a “transparent” and “accountable” organization.
On April 16, while addressing citizens in Şanlıurfa, Erdoğan alleged that Harran University was built during his reign. However, the university was built in 1992, whereas Erdoğan’s Justice and Development Party (AKP) was founded in 2001. But, several faculties of the university came into existence during AKP reign.
Erdoğan alleged that 1.7 million Istanbulites participated in the May 7-dated rally of the ruling People’s Alliance. However, according to the scenario in which 5 people can stand in a square meter, it is at most 865,000 people that could have attended the rally.
According to the photos taken at the rally, it is most likely that 520,000 were there.
