Fenerbahçe fans call on government to resign after quake destruction

In a Feb. 25 game, Fenerbahçe fans shouted slogans calling on the Justice and Development Party (AKP) government to resign over not preparing the country for earthquakes despite being in power for over 20 years.

In the game between Fenerbahçe and Konyaspor, fans shouted “Government resign!” and “A pack of lies. It's been 20 years, resign," in Şükrü Saraçoğlu Stadium.

The broadcaster Bein Sports turned down the volume of the fans during the slogans.

The game was the first match in the Turkish Super League after all matches were postponed due to Feb. 6 earthquakes.

Fenerbahçe beat Konyaspor 4-0, closing the gap with leader Galatasaray.

Besides pre-earthquake preparation, the Turkish government faces growing criticism over its failure to take timely action in the face of two earthquakes.

Two major earthquakes hit southeastern Turkey on Feb. 6 at magnitudes of 7.7 and 7.6.

As of Feb. 25, some 44,218 people have yet lost their lives due to quakes in 11 provinces according to official figures.
