'Freakish' sculptures placed to honor health workers stir debate in Turkey
Sculptures placed in Turkey's Denizli to honor healthcare workers' efforts during the pandemic were slammed due to being remarkably ugly. "Are we this scary?" a doctor asked upon seeing the "artworks."
Duvar English - Sculptures placed to honor healthcare workers in the western province of Denizli were slammed for being utterly "freakish."
The Merkezefendi Municipality in Denizli, which is run by the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), wanted to thank the health workers for their efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic, but failed significantly.
"I wish the municipality had asked for help from a sculptor. Are we this scary?" asked Prof. Güner Sönmez, while also thanking the officials for their gesture.
Ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) Group Deputy Chair Cahit Özkan used the incident as an opportunity to criticize the CHP, saying that the sculptures "humiliate the visual pleasure of the people."
