Investigation launched into Turkish district governor for not paying bill at restaurant

Turkey’s Interior Ministry has launched an investigation into a district governor after it came to light that he did not pay the bill at a restaurant for “not liking” the food, Demirören News Agency reported on Nov. 8.

The northeastern province of Artvin’s Yusufeli District Governor Hacı Kerim Meral on Nov. 6 went to a restaurant with his two guests in the district, and ordered doner kebab and rice pudding.

Meral told the restaurant owner Ferhat Kodat that he did not like the food and left the restaurant without paying the bill. The moments were recorded by a security camera. 

After the footage spread over social media and drew ire, the Artvin Governor’s Office on Nov. 7 announced that the Interior Ministry launched an investigation into Meral.
