Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu on June 19 announced that they will distribute the Eid al-Adha donations made to the municipality-run Istanbul Foundation to one million families.

In a social media post, İmamoğlu said, “With the sacrifice (meat) donations made to Istanbul Foundation, we will reach one million families this year. Thanks to all donors, may Allah accept the sacrifices and bring all hearts closer together.”

Mehmet Altınöz, the deputy chair of the former government-ally and Islamist New Welfare Party (YRP), praised İmamoğlu after the move.

Altınöz said in a social media post that “We would like to express our gratitude to Istanbul Mayor İmamoğlu for being instrumental in providing meat to the homes of one million of our fellow Istanbulites in need.”

“In the March 31 local elections, we stated that we will always appreciate him and his team in works that will be for the good and benefit of 16 million Istanbulites. We would like to thank our fellow citizens who made this donation and all Istanbul Foundation employees and volunteers who contributed, and we wish them success in their work,” he added.

Altınöz was his party’s Istanbul mayoral candidate in the March 31st municipal election, and became third after receiving around 2.5 percent of the votes.

Eid al-Adha is a four-day celebration in which many Muslims sacrifice an animal and distribute its meat to those in need.
