Boğaziçi University academics mark two weeks of rector protests on snow-white campus
Academics of Boğaziçi University continued their peaceful protest against President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's appointment of a rector to their school in an all-white landscape on Jan. 18. Marking the second week of their peaceful resistance, the academic clapped in protest of the appointment.
Academics of Boğaziçi University have been staging protests in front of the building where the Rectorial Office is located on campus since Jan. 4, when a handover ceremony was organized for President Erdoğan's rector appointment.
Erdoğan's appointment Melih Bulu is a member of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), which deems his undemocratic appointment a targeted blow at academic freedom by most.
Boğaziçi academics' primary demand in their peaceful resistance is Bulu's immediate resignation and the organization of democratic elections to choose the next rector.
On campus to accompany their professors, some Boğaziçi students made a snowman outside the Rectorial Office and dubbed him "appointed man" ("kayyum adam"), a play on the Turkis words for snowman ("kardan adam").
