Local Turkish health directorate uses mosque speakers to shame unvaccinated residents

The local health directorate in the eastern province of Muş shamed non-vaccinated residents by announcing their names on the speakers of a mosque, Demirören news agency reported on Oct. 22.

In their efforts to reach the "blue" category of vaccine rates, the Muş Health Directorate formed mobile teams to visit neighborhoods and villages for vaccinations.

With vaccination stands set up at certain locations, the health officials read the names of non-vaccinated or semi-vaccinated citizens on mosque speakers, prompting the relevant persons to show up and receive their shots.

The health directorate formed 20 teams to conduct the campaign, while the officials are required to give vaccination services at some residents' homes as well.

The ongoing vaccination program divides Turkey into four color codes based on COVID-19 risk, with blue assigned to low-risk provinces.

The number of COVID-19 daily cases, which climbed to record highs at above 60,000 in April, are currently hovering around 30,000, with the daily virus-related death toll standing at around 200.
