A magnitude 5.0 earthquake hit the eastern province of Elazığ on Nov. 8 at 5.04 p.m. local time, said Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 16.22 km, AFAD said, adding that the epicenter of the quake was Elazığ’s city center.

“We are continuing our investigations in the area related to the earthquake felt in the center of Elazığ. There is no negative situation reported yet,” Elazığ Governor Numan Hatioğlu said.

“AFAD and all the teams of our relevant institutions started inspections immediately. There is no negative situation at the moment. I wish our citizens affected by the earthquake get well soon,” Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said.

The earthquake was also felt in the neighboring provinces.

The region is one of the most seismically active districts in the country, where earthquakes occur often and are destructive.

41 people died and hundreds were injured after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Elazığ in 2020.

The Feb. 6, 2023, Kahramanmaraş earthquakes, one at a magnitude of 7.7 and the other at 7.6, also affected the eastern province.
