"We remind you each day that we are the granddaughters of witches you couldn't burn, and we own up to our freedom. We will never leave our lives and our rights up to you," the women said during the protest.
"Screw your concept of family!" was one of the signs carried by the women in reference to the AKP government's, specifically President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's, withdrawal of Turkey from the Istanbul Convention on the grounds that the international treaty threatened the Turkish concept of family.
An international document protecting women against domestic violence, Istanbul Convention was highly criticized by conservative circles for its protection of "all genders," a statement that right-leaning opinion leaders said encouraged homosexuality.
