Marxist intellectual David Harvey gave one of his online "Anti-Capitalist Chronicles: Freedom, Necessity and Anti-Capitalism" lectures by wearing a "Gezi Park" t-shirt to support Gezi trial defendants, including philanthropist Osman Kavala.
In this episode of Anti-Capitalist Chronicles, Harvey pointed to a number of "hopeful changes" in the political landscape of various countries like Colombia, Peru, Brazil and France.
During the lecture, Harvey said that "authoritarian figures on the right" are not doing too well and that "[Turkish President Recep] Erdoğan is in a real mess in Turkey with his crazy ideas about keeping interest rates low in the midst of incredible inflation."
Harvey's Anti-Capitalist Chronicles is a bi-weekly podcast that looks at capitalism through Marxist lens. Harvey is the foremost Marxist thinker about political economy and has been teaching Karl Marx's Capital for over 40 years. The Istanbul 13th Heavy Penal Court on April 25 sentenced Kavala to aggravated life in prison, finding him guilty of attempting to overthrow the government by financing the 2013 Gezi Park protests.
The court also sentenced Mücella Yapıcı, Çiğdem Mater, Hakan Altınay, Mine Özerden, Can Atalay, Tayfun Kahraman and Yiğit Ali Ekmekçi to 18 years in jail for aiding the alleged attempt to overthrow the government. The court said it decided to acquit Kavala of espionage charge due to a lack of evidence.
