As the Turkish government’s oppression has been intensifying, the number of inmates has increased by 50,000 in the last six months in the country.

The number of inmates in Turkey has risen to 392,456, marking around a 50,000 increase in the last six months according to reporting by the daily Sözcü.
Accordingly, there were some 342,526 inmates in Turkey in July 2024, which rose to 392,456 as of February 2025 in 403 prisons nationwide.
335,799 of these inmates have already been convicted.
Meanwhile, 371,435 of them are men, 17,131 of them are women and 3,890 of them are children.
In 2024, 98.7 billion liras was spent on prisons in Turkey from the budget.
Some 25,000 of these inmates are university graduates.
On the other hand, the Justice Ministry is starting the construction of 11 new prisons this year to open in 2027.
Several Turkish prisons suffer from overcapacity and the ill-treatment of the inmates.
