Even though the rainfall received in 2023 with 644 kg/m² was below the averages, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) drew attention to the fact that the recent rains have brought blessings to the dams of Istanbul, which has been experiencing the driest period of recent years.
Nonetheless, the total occupancy rate compared to the same months in previous years was still in a ten-year low level. Reservoirs now hold a total of 200 million cubic meters of water, marking also the lowest level in a decade.
However, due to the heavy rain that has been falling in the megacity since Nov. 11, there has been a 6.9 percent increase in Istanbul's dams in about ten days.
In five of the 10 dams supplying water to Istanbul, the distribution of the amount of water available fell below five percent. Reservoirs of Pabuçdere, Kazandere and Istırancalar dams consisted less then one percent of the available water even though they have much more capacity.
