Over 3.4 million households experience deep poverty in Turkey

As of June 2024, the number of households receiving financial assistance under Turkey’s Family Support Program reached 3.5 million.

Within the scope of the program implemented since June 2022, households in poverty have been provided with support between 850 Turkish liras and 1,250 liras according to their per capita income ranging from 450 liras to 5,670 liras.

In June 2022, when the program was put into practice, 2.5 million households benefited from the support, according to the reporting of the daily BirGün based on the statistics from the Ministry of Family and Social Services.

Almost four billion liras ($120.8M) were transferred to impoverished households in January 2024 alone. The amount of social assistance provided to households with a per capita income of less than 1,883 liras rose to 20.46 billion liras by the end of May.

The number of households covered by the program, which includes households with a per capita income of fewer than 1,883 liras, approached 480,000 in May 2024.

The number of households included in the program increased by 215,605 from January to May alone.

In Turkey, the hunger threshold surpassed the minimum wage by nearly 2,000 liras in June, reaching 18,980 liras ($573), while the poverty threshold rose to 61,820 liras ($1,867), according to labor union Türk-İş.
