Turkey's Foreign Ministry on Jan. 9 condemned thousands of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro storming key government buildings in Brazil.

“It is important to respect the results of elections and the democratic processes that reflect the will of the people in the country,” the ministry said in a statement.

“We express our solidarity with the Government of President Lula da Silva and the Brazilian people in the face of these acts of violence,” it added.

Thousands of Bolsonaro's backers stormed Congress, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace on Jan. 8 following the inauguration of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Bolsonaro's leftist rival, according to reporting by Reuters.
