Turkey records hottest june in over half a century

June 2024 reported the highest average temperatures in Turkey in the past 53 years, according to the Turkish State Meteorological Service. Rainfall across the country during the same period also decreased by 65 percent compared to the average, marking the lowest precipitation in the past 23 years.

June 2024 was the hottest one in 53 years, according to the temperature analyses of the Turkish State Meteorological Service.

The lowest temperature was recorded at 1.6 ºC in eastern Erzurum province and the highest temperature was 47.8 °C in southeastern Şanlıurfa province.

The average temperature for June across Turkey, which was 21.8 degrees Celsius between 1991 and 2020, was recorded at 25.4 °C last month, 3.6 °C above normal.

Last month’s average temperature was 2.0 °C higher than the closest month to its average temperature, June 2019 (23.4 °C).

Average temperatures were around seasonal averages around only the Doğubeyazıt district of Ağrı province and above seasonal averages in other parts of the country. 

Southeast Anatolia recorded the highest average temperature with 31.1 °C whereas Eastern Anatolia recorded the lowest with 21.8 °C.

June 2024 rainfall in Turkey drops 65 pct below average

Rainfall across Turkey in June 2024 decreased by 65 percent compared to the average. The June 2024 rainfall was 11.9 mm, while the June average (1991-2020) was 33.6 mm, and the June 2023 rainfall was 58.1 mm.

While this represents a 65 percent decrease compared to the average and an 80 percent decrease compared to last year's June rainfall. This marked the lowest June rainfall in Turkey in the past 23 years.

Regionally, all areas received below-average rainfall, with the Marmara Region showing the greatest decrease at 92 percent.

The Aegean and Mediterranean regions experienced their lowest rainfall in the past 23 years, while the Marmara and Black Sea regions saw their lowest in the past 21 years, and the Central Anatolia region in the past 12 years.

The highest precipitation was recorded in Rize (Black Sea) with 97.0 mm and the lowest precipitation was recorded in İzmir (Aegean) with 0.4 mm.
