Turkey starts gradual normalization after controversial full lockdown
Turkey started a gradual normalization following the nationwide lockdown that ended on May 17, after weeks of controversy over Ankara's double standards in enforcing restrictions.
The Turkish population has started a "gradual normalization" period following the controversial complete lockdown that ended on May 17.
Ankara was widely criticized for mandating closures for all businesses without offering any financial support, prompting protest by business owners who have already suffered more than a year's financial struggles caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Big cities like Istanbul also failed to observe any notable difference in the number of commuters during the lockdown, with all workers still required to head to their places of employment.
The nationwide travel restrictions were lifted on May 17 as well, although thousands of exempting permits were issued during the lockdown, allowing for citizens to travel despite the "full closure."
