Turkey's hunger threshold surpasses 21,000 liras in December

Turkey’s hunger threshold for a family of four exceeded 21,000 Turkish liras in December 2024, whereas the poverty threshold was recorded as 68,675 liras ($1942), according to the research of Confederation of Turkish Trade Unions (Türk-İş).

The monthly food expenditure amount that a family of four living in the capital Ankara should make in order to have a healthy and balanced diet (hunger threshold) increased to 21,083 Turkish liras ($597), according to the Confederation of Turkish Trade Unions’ (Türk-İş) research for December 2024.

This figure was 20,561 liras in November according to the Türk-İş. 

The total amount of food expenditures and other compulsory monthly expenditures for clothing, housing (rent, electricity, water, fuel), transport, education, health, and similar needs (poverty threshold) increased to 68,675 liras ($1942).

The cost of living for a single employee increased to 27,364 liras ($774) per month.

On the other hand, the increase in the minimum expenditure amount that a family of four living in Ankara should make for food was 2.54 percent compared to the previous month. The 12-month rate of change was 46.09 percent.

A minimum wage worker earns 22,104 liras ($625) as of 2025 after a 30 percent increase from last year’s figure.

Turkey's official statistical authority, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), reported the annual inflation rate as 47.09 percent for November 2024 while the independent inflation group ENAG put the figure at 86.76 percent.
