Turkey’s Religious Affairs Directorate spends 6 million liras on toilet repair

Turkey’s Religious Affairs Directorate (Diyanet) renovated the toilets in its service building in the capital Ankara for six million liras ($176,000). Diyanet spent 259.6 million liras a day in the first seven months of 2024 which was approximately 15,269 minimum wages (17,002 liras).

Turkish Religious Affairs Directorate (Diyanet) has spent six million Turkish liras ($176,000) for the maintenance, repair and renovation of the toilets in its central service building in the capital Ankara, according to the reporting of the daily BirGün.

The Diyanet, which spent 55.66 billion liras ($1.64B) in the January-July 2024 period, is known for its long-standing extravagant spending despite the government's ongoing public saving policies.

The directorate on May 20 held a tender for “Maintenance, Repair and Renovation of Floor Toilets in the Central Service Building.” An expenditure of 7.16 million liras was foreseen for the works to be carried out within the scope of the tender.

Although the contract for the tender totaling six million liras was signed on July 23, it was only published on the Electronic Public Procurement Platform on Sept. 2.
