Turkish high school students' literature day reported to education ministry

A literature event organized at a high school in Turkey's northwestern province of Sakarya was reported to the Education Ministry, the daily Hürriyet reported on Dec. 27. 

Cemil Meriç Social Sciences High School has been celebrating a literature day for the past four years where students dress up as their favorite novel characters. 

Videos and pictures from the event of this year were widely shared on social media, with the majority of the users praising the school and Ercan Yılmaz, literature teacher and poet, for the idea. 

Yılmaz said that various panels are organized throughout the week with the participation of prominent novelists and authors. The students also interpret the characters and describe them to others in these panels, the teacher said. 

For some reason, not everyone was pleased with the event, according to Hürriyet, which said that one person, whose identity wasn't disclosed, reported it to the ministry. 

"The ministry's main goal is to raise average Turkish citizens," wrote the complainant.
