Turkish-owned ship attacked off coast of Yemen

Turkey's Foreign Affairs Ministry announced that a cargo ship owned by a Turkish company was targeted by a missile attack carried out by the Houthis off the coast of Yemen.

Turkey's Foreign Ministry on Nov. 20 announced that a missile attack was carried against the Panama-flagged and Turkish-owned cargo ship Anadolu S while sailing off the coast of Yemen by Iran-aligned Houthis.

In a statement, Foreign Ministry said that necessary initiatives have been taken to prevent the recurrence of a similar incident.

A military spokesman for Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis said on Nov. 19 they had launched a missile attack on a vessel in the Red Sea, without specifying when.

Vessel tracker website Marinetraffic shows that Anadolu S was last located in the Red Sea nearly five days ago as of Nov. 20 and was estimated to arrive at Pat Qasim on Nov. 23.

Since October 2023, the Houthis have attacked over 90 commercial ships in the Red Sea as the group said it is a response against Israel's genocide in Gaza,. The militant group claimed to target vessels connected to Israel, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

Even though Turkey formally banned trade with Israel, pro-Palestinan groups in the country argue that the trade has been continuing in more discrete ways.
