Veteran Turkish actress Fatma Girik dies at 79
Fatma Girik, one of the icons of Yeşilçam Cinema, has passed away at the age of 79. Hospital authorities announced that Girik had lost her life due to multi-organ failure after being infected with the COVID-19 disease. Girik had served as a mayor of Istanbul's Şişli district between 1989-1994 from the Social Democratic People's Party (SHP).

Veteran Turkish film and television actress Fatma Girik died on Jan. 24 at the age of 79.
Istanbul's Şişli district Mayor Muammer Keskin announced the death of the veteran actress on Twitter.
Girik was born in Istanbul in 1942.
The actress is renowned for her roles in cult Turkish movies, such as 1981’s Kanlı Nigar (Bloody Mary) and 1962's Yılanların Öcü (Revenge of the Snakes) and in various TV shows.
She also participated in active politics and served as mayor of Şişli district between 1989-1994. from the Social Democratic People's Party (SHP).
"I am deeply saddened by the loss of our former Şişli Mayor, dear Fatma Girik," Keskin said.

Hospital authorities announced that Girik had lost her life due to multi-organ failure after being infected with the COVID-19 disease.
Many politicians and artists expressed their condolences after Girik's death.
Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu tweeted that Girik had "enshrined in people's hearts with her works that mirrored the society and with her stance in politics."
