Wooden walkway built by five-star hotel kills caretta caretta babies in Antalya
Some 60 newborn caretta caretta (loggerhead) sea turtles died after getting trapped underneath a wooden walkway that a five-star hotel placed on the beach in Antalya, the Ecological Research Society (EKAD) said on Aug. 27.
Duvar English - Sixty baby caretta caretta turtles that hatched on the beach of a five-star hotel in the Mediterranean province of Antalya died because of a misplaced pathway by the hotel management, the Ecological Research Society (EKAD) said on Aug. 27.
An official from the association told Duvar English that the problem is a widespread one and not specific to one single case.
Not naming the hotel, the official said that they will report the incident to the General Directorate of Nature Protection and National Parks.
Located in the Belek district, the five-star hotel built the wooden pathway on top of the turtles' nesting sites, essentially burying the newborn babies underneath.
